About 'goal.com chelsea transfer news'|Inter Milan Transfer News and Rumours Tracker: Week of August 5








               Many               new               faces               graced               the               Premier               League               as               well               as               players               swapping               teams.

Several               of               the               transfers               didn't               go               as               planned.

Here               is               a               list               of               five               of               the               worst               signings               last               season               in               no               particular               order:
               1)               Fernando               Torres:               Torres               moved               to               Chelsea               in               the               biggest               deal               of               the               January               window               for               £50               million.

Torres               never               quite               lived               up               to               the               fee               and               only               scored               1               goal               in               14               appearances               in               the               league               and               no               goals               in               4               Champions               League               appearances.

Torres               never               found               his               form               for               the               Blues,               but               still               forced               Didier               Drogba               out               of               the               lineup.

Chelsea               were               a               resurgent               side               at               the               end               of               the               season               finishing               in               second               place,               but               that               was               to               no               thanks               of               the               Spanish               striker.

Torres               will               have               to               find               his               best               form               again               to               justify               his               expensive               transfer               to               London.
               2)               Sebastian               Squillaci:               Squillaci               was               signed               by               Arsenal               from               Sevilla               to               add               experience               to               their               back-line.

Squillaci               has               played               in               top               leagues               across               Europe               as               well               as               in               the               Champions               League.

However,               his               experience               and               ability               didn't               transfer               to               the               English               Premier               League.

Squillaci               made               32               appearances               for               the               Gunners               in               all               competitions               and               aside               from               Squillaci's               game-winning               header               against               Stoke,               there               weren't               very               many               bright               spots.

Squillaci               never               adapted               to               the               pace               of               the               game               and               struggled               dealing               with               balls               in               the               air,               most               notably               the               own               goal               at               Wigan.

Squillaci               was               signed               for               £4               million               last               season               and               it               looks               like               money               that               could               have               been               better               spent               elsewhere.
               3)               Joe               Cole:               Cole               was               signed               on               a               free               transfer               to               a               four-year               deal               with               wages               around               £90,000               a               week.

Cole               was               trying               to               get               his               career               back               on               track               after               several               injuries,               but               he               failed               to               do               that               at               Liverpool.

He               made               32               appearances               in               all               competitions               only               chipping               in               3               goals               and               1               assist.

Cole               also               got               a               red-card               on               his               Premier               League               debut               for               Liverpool               against               Arsenal.

Cole               was               brought               in               by               Roy               Hodgson               and               after               his               dismissal               as               manager,               Cole               struggled               to               find               playing               time.

Cole               was               rumored               to               be               going               to               several               teams               before               he               signed               for               Liverpool,               but               it               looks               like               those               who               didn't               sign               him               are               getting               the               last               laugh.
               4)               Edin               Dezeko:               Dzeko               came               to               Manchester               City               with               a               great               goal-scoring               reputation,               but               never               showed               it               in               the               English               Premier               League.

Dzeko               only               notched               2               goals               for               City               in               15               appearances.

With               the               price               tag               (£27               m),               much               more               was               expected               of               him.

Coming               over               in               January,               Dzeko               never               quite               adapted               to               life               in               the               Premier               League.

He               will               most               certainly               have               to               turn               it               around               next               season,               especially               with               the               possibility               of               Carlos               Tevez's               exit.

For               now,               he               remains               one               of               the               worst               signings               of               last               season.
               5)               Bebe:               Bebe               was               truly               unknown               to               many               when               he               made               a               £7               million               move               to               Manchester               United               from               Vitoria               de               Guimares.

The               fee               for               his               services               was               very               high               considering               he               failed               to               make               any               appearances               for               the               Portuguese               club.

Bebe               struggled,               although               he               scored               2               goals               during               the               year.

He               never               made               an               impact               at               United               and               even               struggled               against               non-league               side               Crawley               Town.

Bebe               has               since               been               loaned               to               Besiktas               in               Turkey               for               the               season               with               an               option               to               be               signed               permanently               for               £2               million.

Bebe               could               eventually               get               off               this               list,               but               for               now               he               was               one               of               the               worst               signings               of               the               2010-2011               Premier               League               signing.

    About 'premiership latest'|Premiership Latest: Never Rub Another Man's Rhubarb








    The               Collingwood               Magpies               had               an               incredible               year               last               year,               and               it               is               due               them               to               have               a               look               at               their               history               and               consider               how               they               got               to               be               such               a               celebrated               team.

    What               has               led               to               their               greatness?

    What               are               some               of               the               key               dates               in               their               history?

    Who               are               some               of               the               "greats"               associated               with               this               team?
                   The               premiership               victory               was               certainly               a               great               feat,               and               the               Grand               Final               was               such               a               neck-and-neck               battle               that               it               gave               way               to               a               Grand               Final               replay,               in               which               the               Magpies               utterly               trounced               the               Saint               Kilda               Saints.
                   Not               having               won               a               Grand               Final               for               the               past               twenty               years,               the               rejoicing               amongst               the               Magpies'               fans               was               massive               -               prior               to               the               game,               AFL               merchandise               coloured               the               streets               as               supporters               of               opposing               teams               proudly               showed               their               allegiance.

    This               gave               way               to               the               colours               of               black               and               white               following               the               game               with               flags               and               scarves               blowing               from               car               windows,               fences,               and               anywhere               else               available               to               fly               their               colours.
                   Looking               back               on               Collingwood's               first               Premiership               victory               in               1902,               it               is               significant               to               note               that               it               was               not               only               Collingwood's               first               premiership               season,               but               it               was               also               the               first               time               for               the               Grand               Finals               to               be               played               at               the               MCG.

    In               a               nail-biting               event               the               very               next               year,               the               Pies               won               their               back-to-back               title               under               warm               conditions,               and               against               a               strong               opponent,               pulling               into               the               lead               at               the               last               moment               with               a               mere               two               points.

    The               question               remains               for               2011               -               will               they               pull               off               another               back-to-back?
                   Not               only               has               Collingwood               succeeded               to               obtain               two               back               to               back               victories,               they               have               had               a               four               year               consecutive               run               -               1927-1930.

    Though               they               have               competed               in               an               outstanding               number               of               Their               victories               got               smaller               however,               and               by               the               time               the               Grand               Final               came               around               in               2010,               their               supporters               were               ready               for               a               party               -               and               boy               did               they               ever               party!

    After               20               years               of               silence,               they               were               back               at               the               top               -               and               no               one               was               able               to               miss               it.

    AFL               merchandise               abounded               wherever               one               looked,               and               it               seemed               as               if               all               of               Australia               was               having               a               party...Not               that               all               of               Australia               are               Colllingwood               supporters,               but               they               certainly               have               a               large               fan               base.
                   In               fact,               not               only               does               Collingwood               have               the               largest               fan               base               in               AFL,               but               they               also               hold               the               title               for               the               largest               supporters               of               any               Australian               sport.

    In               1970,               when               Collingwood               and               Carlton               battled               it               out               for               the               Premiership               title,               a               record               crowd               of               121,696               spectators               watched.

    And               in               2010,               the               year               of               the               Magpie,               they               beat               their               previous               membership               record               with               a               total               of               57,617.

    Many               supporters               purchase               AFL               merchandise               and               proudly               support               the               Magpies.
                   With               8               Brownlow               Medal               winners,               beginning               with               Syd               Coventry               in               1927               and               the               latest               being               Nathan               Buckley               in               2003,               Collingwood               has               many               prestigious               players.

    Nathan               Buckley               also               set               other               records,               including               the               most               bests               and               fairests.
                   Nick               Maxwell               is               the               current               captain               of               the               Magpies,               having               begun               in               2008,               and               led               them               to               victory               in               the               2010               Grand               Finals.
                   True               to               their               motto,               this               last               year,               the               Magpies               truly               have               prospered!

    It               appears               on               the               surface               that               football               is               facing               major               changes               in               England.

    Obviously               these               sort               of               changes               started               a               while               ago               with               the               introduction               of               the               transfer               window               and               the               money               Chelsea               have               had               injected               into               them.

    Since               then               though               things               have               seriously               escalated               and               foreign               ownership               has               become               the               rule               not               the               exception.

    Aside               from               the               clubs               who               have               foreign               owners               there               are               also               countless               examples               of               clubs               that               have               superrich               British               owners.

    There               are               relatively               few               examples               of               football               owners               in               the               top               two               divisions               in               England               who               would               be               classed               as               "poor"               millionaires.

    Norwich               City               has               been               in               the               news               this               week               regarding               a               possible               takeover.

    Two               members               of               the               Norwich               City               board               resigned               in               Andrew               and               Sharon               Turner.

    This               left               the               club               with               a               2               million               pound               void               to               fill.

    That               drama               is               already               over               because               majority               shareholder               Delia               Smith               has               since               injected               the               2               million.

    This               doesn't               mean               the               problems               are               over               as               fresh               investment               is               needed.

    The               strongest               rumour               surrounds               Peter               Cullum,               who               is               worth               1.7               billion.

    If               Cullum               does               takeover               then               this               will               add               another               superrich               Championship               club;               joining               the               likes               of               QPR               and               Wolves.
                   The               problem               with               the               Premiership               at               the               moment               is               that               there               appears               to               be               only               one               way               to               be               successful               and               that               is               by               throwing               money               at               the               problem.

    Of               course               this               is               no               guarantee               of               success               after               all               the               likes               of               Newcastle,               Liverpool               and               Tottenham               have               done               that,               but               it               has               bought               them               limited               success.
                   I               have               major               concerns               regarding               the               motivates               of               many               of               these               foreign               owners.

    It               appears               that               football               in               getting               more               and               more               businesslike               by               the               day.

    Yes,               football               is               a               business,               but               very               different               from               any               other               kind               of               business.

    It's               my               opinion               that               it's               vital               to               have               business               people               and               football               people               involved               together               in               the               running               of               a               football               club.

    What               really               annoys               me               are               boards               undermining               managers               when               it               comes               to               buying               and               selling               players.

    The               reality               is               the               football               expert               is               the               manager               and               it's               vital               to               trust               him               to               do               a               good               job.

    There               is               more               to               running               a               football               club               than               buying               players               that               owners               think               will               be               good.

    Building               a               team               should               be               left               to               managers.

    I               also               fear               that               if               some               kind               of               specialized               rules               are               not               implemented               than               football               as               we               know               it               will               spin               out               of               control.

    In               the               short               term               foreign               ownership               will               remain.
