Many new faces graced the Premier League as well as players swapping teams. Several of the transfers didn't go as planned. Here is a list of five of the worst signings last season in no particular order: 1) Fernando Torres: Torres moved to Chelsea in the biggest deal of the January window for £50 million. Torres never quite lived up to the fee and only scored 1 goal in 14 appearances in the league and no goals in 4 Champions League appearances. Torres never found his form for the Blues, but still forced Didier Drogba out of the lineup. Chelsea were a resurgent side at the end of the season finishing in second place, but that was to no thanks of the Spanish striker. Torres will have to find his best form again to justify his expensive transfer to London. 2) Sebastian Squillaci: Squillaci was signed by Arsenal from Sevilla to add experience to their back-line. Squillaci has played in top leagues across Europe as well as in the Champions League. However, his experience and ability didn't transfer to the English Premier League. Squillaci made 32 appearances for the Gunners in all competitions and aside from Squillaci's game-winning header against Stoke, there weren't very many bright spots. Squillaci never adapted to the pace of the game and struggled dealing with balls in the air, most notably the own goal at Wigan. Squillaci was signed for £4 million last season and it looks like money that could have been better spent elsewhere. 3) Joe Cole: Cole was signed on a free transfer to a four-year deal with wages around £90,000 a week. Cole was trying to get his career back on track after several injuries, but he failed to do that at Liverpool. He made 32 appearances in all competitions only chipping in 3 goals and 1 assist. Cole also got a red-card on his Premier League debut for Liverpool against Arsenal. Cole was brought in by Roy Hodgson and after his dismissal as manager, Cole struggled to find playing time. Cole was rumored to be going to several teams before he signed for Liverpool, but it looks like those who didn't sign him are getting the last laugh. 4) Edin Dezeko: Dzeko came to Manchester City with a great goal-scoring reputation, but never showed it in the English Premier League. Dzeko only notched 2 goals for City in 15 appearances. With the price tag (£27 m), much more was expected of him. Coming over in January, Dzeko never quite adapted to life in the Premier League. He will most certainly have to turn it around next season, especially with the possibility of Carlos Tevez's exit. For now, he remains one of the worst signings of last season. 5) Bebe: Bebe was truly unknown to many when he made a £7 million move to Manchester United from Vitoria de Guimares. The fee for his services was very high considering he failed to make any appearances for the Portuguese club. Bebe struggled, although he scored 2 goals during the year. He never made an impact at United and even struggled against non-league side Crawley Town. Bebe has since been loaned to Besiktas in Turkey for the season with an option to be signed permanently for £2 million. Bebe could eventually get off this list, but for now he was one of the worst signings of the 2010-2011 Premier League signing. *All stats were found on espn.soccernet.com |
