2012 was an interesting and even somewhat of a tumultuous calendar year for Tottenham Hotspur. Perceived by some as legitimate title contenders back at the start of January, Spurs fell to fourth in the league table before losing out on Champions League thanks to Chelsea. Manager Harry Redknapp was sacked and ultimately replaced by former Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas, and Tottenham are again in a Champions League spot in the table after somewhat of a slow start to the AVB era. They also advanced past the group stage of Europa League play. Things could be worse. 2012 Tottenham Hotspur midseason review: MVP Gareth Bale is once again the best overall player in the Tottenham team, but I have to go with Jan Vertonghen for this particular award. The former Ajax man who joined Spurs over the summer has been the most (and possibly the only) consistent defender in the team throughout the first half of the campaign, routinely allowing me to forget that Tottenham have been without both Younes Kaboul and Benoit Assou-Ekotto. He's also found the back of the net twice in the first season of his Spurs career. The 25-year old Belgium international appears to be the new cornerstone of a Tottenham back line that lost Ledley King to retirement following the 2011-12 season. Vertonghen, Steven Caulker, Kyle Naughton, Kyle Walker (more on him later) and the on-loan Danny Rose offer plenty of promise for the future of the Spurs defense. It also doesn't hurt to have a world class goalkeeper such as Hugo Lloris out on the pitch. Honorable mentions: Bale, Lloris, Jermain Defoe 2012 Tottenham Hotspur midseason review: LVP He's one of the better young defenders in the league when at his best, but it would be dishonest to suggest that 2012 has been a kind year to Kyle Walker. What was thought to be a run of poor form last spring continued for the Tottenham right back this fall, and many Tottenham supporters viewed Walker as the main villain following the team's 4-2 loss to Chelsea in October. His struggles have even gotten to the point that I've wondered if Villas-Boas dropping Walker from the team for even a match or two wouldn't be best for all involved. Honorable mentions: William Gallas, Emmanuel Adebayor 2012 Tottenham Hotspur midseason review: AVB's grade The start of the season was a bit nervy for Tottenham supporters as Villas-Boas and his squad worked on their chemistry, and Spurs losing both Luka Modric and Rafael van der Vaart during the transfer window certainly didn't help matters. Players and manager alike adapted as the season progressed, however, and Villas-Boas eventually settled on a first choice goalkeeper (Lloris over Brad Friedel) and a starting eleven that's capable of hanging with any other side in the EPL. Villas-Boas will also have Spurs playing in at least two additional Europa League games, something that never interested the previously mentioned Redknapp. I won't pretend that AVB has been flawless since taking over at Spurs, but even his biggest critics have to admit that Tottenham sure look like a top-four side at the end of December. Aaron Lennon is perhaps playing the best football of his career under his new boss, and Jermain Defoe is on pace to score over 20 goals across all competitions. One could argue that the mark is either a bit harsh or a little too generous, but I have no problem giving Villas-Boas a B+ thus far. 2012 Tottenham Hotspur midseason review: Overall Usually you can read teams by this stage of the season. United, City and Chelsea are all capable of finishing in the top three, while QPR, Reading, Southampton, Aston Villa and Wigan all appear to be headed toward relegation battles. Perhaps the most frustrating thing about Spurs right now is that I'm still not sure what to think about this team's quality. Are they a middle-of-the-road side that will struggle to defeat the likes of City, Arsenal, Stoke and even Newcastle, or are they really a Champions League team that's finally finding their form? I honestly cannot adequately answer that question right now, and that makes me both nervous and excited about what is to come. |
